This is for You, Roy

Anthem” by Leonard Cohen

The birds they sang at the break of day
Start again, I heard them say
Don't dwell on what has passed away…
Yeah, the wars, they will be fought again
The holy dove, she will be caught again…
The dove is never free

Ring the bells that still can ring

We asked for signs, the signs were sent…
Yeah, the widowhood of every government Signs for all to see…
You can strike up the march, there is no drum

Every heart to love will come

Roy T. Richter’s elderly, but still very sharp, father spoke at his funeral last Tuesday.  He described his son as fearless and said he never knew a greater man.  Roy Jr. started as a young police officer who personally took on New York City’s worst criminals.  He hunted them down on his overtime because he couldn’t stand them getting away with their crimes.  He faced death every day with amazing courage.  He later became an attorney and had a many-faceted career, largely assisting the police force.  He did not like “dirty” cops and fought against them.  He loved the city upon which streets he risked his life.  After the 2020 riots, he personally took footage of the devastation and wanted people to see it.  This is the man he was.  Let us remember his this way.  With dignity, integrity and honor.
